The Dick and Carey (D&C) model of Instructional Systems Design (ISD) encompasses the five essential components of a system - 1) Environment 2) Input, 3) Throughput/process flow or the interdependence of components, 4) Output, and 5) Feedback.
It consists of "interdependent" components such as the instructor, learners, materials, instructional activities, delivery system, and learning and performance environments. These components interact, adjust and work together to bring about the desired student or learning outcomes.
It differentiates from most other models in that it considers instruction from the perspective of the learners and provides a good application of the systems approach where the ID process is presented as a continuous circular cycle. Finally, it puts a greater emphasis on how to manage or control an instructional design process.
